I don't often buy books, and when I do, I go to one of my local bookstores. I'm lucky so many exist in town. I visit my library weekly, and am grateful for Libby. I also pass along most of the books I read. I read somewhere not to feel guilty about buying a book, because you're paying for a small amount of someone's time that transported you somewhere. And I support experiments like this as one of awareness.

I use the library.

I'm also doing a version of this for maybe 6 months or a year, mostly because my TBR stack is getting ridiculous—I did a lot of preordering last year and got a bunch of books for Christmas. This year I'm hoping to spend less money on books, yes, but also to relentlessly DNF books I don't like, which is much easier with a library book I spent nothing on!

Exactly! I need to DNF more, and it's always been so hard to do after buying the book.

I’m gonna join you in this. Need the accountability!!

I'm not on a book buying "ban," but I am being more thoughtful of what I purchase versus what just goes on the wish list and looked for on Libby first. I have been hoarding my Audible credits too and have used them on audiobooks of some I can't find on Libby and really want to listen to the audio instead. ❤

I’m on a book buying ban till March and I have to say that browsing at bookstores has actually made it easier! It feels nice to roam around with the certainty that I’m not allowed to buy anything and take pictures of the books I’m curious about

Hmm, I like the idea of browsing and taking photos. Good tip!

I support the book ban! Libby is a life saving tbh and i have enjoyed browsing my public library and checking out a few physical books too instead of automatically purchasing!

Good luck!!

I need to do the same and add journals to the ban...

Lol, I'll die if I can't buy more journals!

We cannot cancel everything!

I adore Jami Attenberg! I also love Libby. And I am happy to send you a copy—Kindle or Audible—of my newish memoir, Honeymoon at Sea: How I Found Myself Living on a Small Boat.

Best of luck with your book buying ban. I’m attempting something similar in that I’m working on taking more books out of my local library this year and maybe only buying ones of authors I’ve already read or know I’ll enjoy. 😅
